This small Skeggox (Old Norse: Bearded Axe) an axe that was in use throughout the Viking Age. The name is derived from the elongated lower portion of the axe head that provides a wide cutting surface without increasing the total weight. The extended part also makes it very well suited for catching shields and weapons. Grimfrost in runes is stamped onto the sharpened blade as a "makers mark". The shaft is untreated, polished ash that can be treated with linseed oil or anything of your choice. A leather protector is included. The pushbuttons can be removed and replaced with leather strings for a historically correct version.
Information: The sheath no longer has buttons as a closing mechanism, but has strings that can be tied. The images will be updated soon.
A skeggox is not a heavy duty wood chopping axe. The blade is thin and made for cutting, whilst a wood chipping axe has a wedge shaped blade to withstand the impact. The elongated parts of the blade are especially vulnerable for heavy impacts, since they have no "backing". They are there to minimize weight and increase the cutting edge.
